Notice to Zomato over 'anti-Dalit' advertisement

 Food delivery company Zomato seems to be embroiled in controversies regarding one of its advertisements. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes, a constitutional body established under Article 338 of the Constitution, has issued a notice to Deepinder Goyal, the founder of Zomato. The company has been accused of defaming the Dalit community through a casteist advertisement. If Zomato fails to respond to the notice, a summons will be issued. This notice has been issued to Zomato Company on 12 June 2023.

However, the issue of this controversial advertisement of Zomato was raised on June 8 on the occasion of World Environment Day. Then Zomato had removed this advertisement. Zomato then clarified, "On World Environment Day, our intention was to spread awareness about the potential of plastic waste and the benefits of recycling in a humorous way. Zomato made an advertisement on World Environment Day with a character 'garbage' from the film 'Lagaan'. In the advertisement, a character named 'Kachra' was shown in Ashutosh Gowariker's film 'Lagaan', which came in the year 2001. Even then the filmmakers had to give clarification.
