Swami Vivekananda was once going somewhere. When there was a river on the way, they stopped there because the boat to cross the river had gone somewhere. Swamiji sat down and started looking for a way to cross the river if the boat returns from there.
One by one a Mahatma also reached there. Swamiji took his introduction while introducing himself. Within minutes, Mahatmaji came to know that Swamiji was waiting for the boat on the bank of the river.
Mahatma ji said, if you stop seeing such small obstacles, then how will you move in the world? You are a master, you are considered a great spiritual teacher and philosopher. Can't cross a little river? Look, this is how the river is crossed.
Mahatma ji stood up and after taking a long round while floating on the surface of the water came back to Swami ji. Surprised Swamiji asked, Mahatmaji, where and how did you get this achievement?
Mahatma ji smiled and said with great pride, this accomplishment was not achieved just like that. For this I had to do penance for thirty years in the Himalayan caves.
After listening to these words of the Mahatma, Swami ji smiled and said, I am surprised by this miracle of yours, but you wasted thirty years of your life for a work like crossing the river which could be done in two paise.
Means 30 years of sacrifice for the work of two paise! If you had spent these thirty years in any work of human welfare or in finding a medicine, by which people would get freedom from disease, then your life would have become really meaningful.
