The Merciless Merchant: Kashmiri Folklore

Once upon a time there was a merchant who treated his servants very cruelly. Whenever someone came to his place for a job, he used to hire him on the condition that if he ever used any bad language or got angry, his nose would be cut off.

Now the servants were not much better than their master, so it is not surprising that many servants had to leave their jobs without a nose. One of his servants was a farmer. Because his own farming had failed, he had to work as a merchant.

This man lived in the mountains where only maize grew and nothing else. That year it rained very little, so both his hard work and money went waste.

He was a very good natured man. If any man could continue his job with that merchant, it was only this man. But alas, this too could not work with him for a long time.

Once upon a time he was very upset about something. By the way, he used to do whatever his master asked him to do. But that day the merchant asked him to do some bad things and provoked him to get angry. When he spoke in anger, he immediately cut off his nose.

This farmer also had a brother. He was very sad to see his brother without a nose, so he thought of taking revenge on that merchant. He went to the merchant and asked him for a job.

The merchant said - "Okay. I will hire you but I have one condition that if you are ever found saying anything bad or getting angry, your nose will be cut off.

Brother said - "I accept your condition if you also accept the same condition."

The merchant said - "I agree."

Brother thought that if this plan works on one person, then it should work on others also.

This plan worked for a long time. Both master and servant were careful about their words and deeds. And keep control over your nature.

But one day the merchant asked his brother to quickly dress his son. The brother immediately went and while dressing the owner's son, pulled him a little here and there so that he started running hither and thither.

The son did not like this behavior of his, so he shouted from there - "O father, O mother."

The merchant asked - "Hey what are you doing."

Brother replied - "While I am dressing him, this boy is not running here and there but wants to sit."

Now the owner had told him to dress the child quickly and nineteen out of twenty people would understand what it meant, but it also meant that "run here and there and get the child dressed."

So brother thought that his master would get angry with him and accepted his second option. He succeeded in angering the owner.

On another occasion the merchant went to some place with his whole family to stay for a few days. There was going to be a fair. This brother also went with him.

The merchant left his brother to take care of the house and before leaving gave him special instructions to take care of the doors and windows of the house. The brother promised to do so loyally to the owner.

It was only a matter of time after the owner had gone to see the fair, that brother's mind also started to see the fair. So he put the furniture and other things of the house in a big pit. Then he called several porters and loaded the doors and windows of the house on them and went to the fair.

There was no limit to the surprise of the merchant when he saw his servant in the fair and saw many coolies following him carrying doors and windows. Due to anger, his mercury climbed to the seventh sky. He shouted - "What have you done, you idiot."

Brother said softly - "Government, I have obeyed your orders. You told me to take proper care of the doors and windows. After you left, I also wanted to see the fair, so I thought that he would be safest with me, so I brought him with me. Your furniture is also safe, I have hidden it in a big pit.

The merchant shouted - "You fool." and slapped his face.

The brother laughed out loud holding his neck from behind and biting off his nose and said – “Now we are equal. Now I go and tell all this to my brother.
