Blood Donation Amrit Mahotsav will be celebrated in 2.50 lakh gram panchayats of the country on World Blood Donor Day on coming June 14. In a letter written to the states, the Union Health Ministry has said that while giving information about blood donation to the villagers, their sarpanch will administer the oath. To celebrate this day as a festival, a target has been given to register maximum number of blood donors.
A senior official of the ministry said that preparations are on to collect record blood on World Blood Donor Day this year. Citing statistics, he said that at present the demand for blood There is a huge gap between supply and demand. In the year 2021, the demand for blood was around 1.46 crore units but the supply was 1.25 crore units. In 2018, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with various organizations published a detailed report on the requirement of blood in India. In 2020, 1.27 crore blood donations were collected, but due to the Corona epidemic, there was a significant drop in blood donation.
Annual loss of 10 lakh units of blood
On April 6, 2022, a study by CMC Vellore researchers was published in the Medical Journal Plus One, according to which the number of eligible blood donors in India is more than 400 million, which is the largest population in comparison to any other country in the world. Despite this, a shortage of 10 lakh units of blood is being recorded every year in India.
■ The study also pointed out that the highest demand of 41.2% or about 60 lakh units of blood every year in India comes from day care in hospitals where blood is transfused to patients suffering from diseases like thalassemia or sickle cell.
The second biggest demand comes from operations in hospitals. Only for surgery, 41 lakh (27.9%) blood units are required annually in the country's hospitals.
33 lakh (22.4%) for obstetrics and gynecology and 12 lakh (8.5%) for paediatrics.
